How You Can Help

What do volunteers do?

The members of our Board of Directors are all volunteers. Some volunteers provide transportation services for children. Some offer their time and companionship as a 'Special Friend' to a parent, child or youth. Volunteer tutors provide assistance to children and youth who are experiencing academic difficulties.

Some of the volunteer opportunities at Durham CAS are:

What do volunteer drivers do?

Volunteer drivers transport children to school, family visits, therapy and medical appointments. Drivers are reimbursed for their mileage and parking expenses. Some drives are "one time" drives (such as an appointment) and some are "ongoing" (such as to school, or a weekly appointment), so there are varying needs for drivers. If you only limited time available, you may still be able to help us.

How do I become a volunteer?

To become a volunteer, please call us and we will send you an application form. Once we receive a complete application, we will be in touch with you to arrange an interview. All volunteers must pass a criminal record check, and sign and Oath of Confidentiality. Once approved, we will strive to find the job that best suits your skills and schedule.

I don't have time to volunteer right now, how else can I help?

We always need financial support to run programs that are not covered by our government funding. You can help by learning more and supporting the Durham Children's Aid Foundation.

Why do you fund raise if you receive government funding?

While the agency does not conduct any fundraising itself, we do receive money from the Durham Children's Aid Foundation.

The Foundation raises money for those programs that are not covered by our government funding. The agency does receive government funding for mandated services. We are funded to investigate allegations of child abuse and neglect, and to provide the necessities of life for children in our care, but we provide many services that are not funded.

We are not funded for any public education or preventive services. And we do not receive any government funding for any of the "extras" for our children and youth in care.

Government funding does not cover our summer camp program, our Community Caring at Christmas campaign, our educational activities during Child Abuse Prevention Month, and many other programs that provide recreational opportunities and help develop skills for children in our care.

What does my donation pay for?

Your donation is directed toward a child or youth in our care - providing possibilities and building a future. Donations support various programs funded by our the Foundation.

You can sponsor a child for summer camp or music lessons, you can also help a child develop skills and build friendships, when he or she is able to participate in a sports league or join a club because of your donation.

Your donation also supports our public education and preventive programs. We do not receive any government funding for education or preventive programs, for those we rely completely on the generous support of our donors. You can also support the post-secondary education of one of our youth, but supporting one of our bursaries.
