In 2005, the Durham Children's Aid Society prepared
for its next century of service, and we undertook
a special initiative. With a grant from the
Ontario Trillium Foundation, a public foundation
was created - to acquire, invest and distribute
funds for children's needs.
Through a volunteer Board of Trustees and a granting
process, the Foundation extends a helping
hand to children in need - helping to break the
cycle of child abuse, and foster the
healthy development of youth.
While the Ontario government provides funding for core child protection services, they do not fund many prevention or enrichment programs.
Many of the most effective programs for child
abuse prevention, continuing education and the
enrichment of children who have been victims of (or are at risk of) abuse are ineligible
for government funding.
Just a few of the many programs that don't receive funding are our summer camp
program, our Community Caring at Christmas campaign,
our educational activities during Child Abuse
Prevention Month, or assistance for post-secondary education.
These factors put a strain on the services and
funding available for the Durham CAS and other
agencies in Durham to do the work necessary to
respond to children's needs and prevent abuse
and neglect.
Children are society's future and its responsibility.
A child or youth looks to family for
his or her care. But when that family is not capable
or is not available, society must care take responsibility.
We have an opportunity
to take a proactive lead in reducing child abuse
and neglect. Foundation supporters will
help to empower Durham's children to take control
and change their future. Contact the Foundation
directly at foundation@durhamcas.ca.
As a registered charity, the vision of the Durham
Children's Aid Society is to make sure children
and youth live in safe, healthy family environments
that promote their becoming socially responsible
adults.
We are proud that on January 30, 2003,
our Board of Directors approved a Donor Bill
of Rights. This helps to ensure the integrity of the
donation process by giving donors a written guarantee
that their donation will be used for the purpose
for which it is intended.

Sometimes it only takes a small gesture to make
a big difference.
You can help by:
- Creating memories by sponsoring a child for a
summer camp adventure.
- Giving the gift of excitement to a child
opening a gift on Christmas morning made possible
by your financial support.
- Helping a child or youth discover and explore
creativity by covering the cost for music or
art lessons.
- Helping to create a future by donating to
one of our bursary funds.
Your donation can also make the intangible - like
developing skills and building friendships - a
reality when a child or youth is able to participate
in a sports league or join a club.
These childhood experiences can bring about changes
in behavior and beliefs -- results that continue
into adulthood and last a lifetime.
